Course Overview
The NRSWA Street Works Operatives course (Units LA, O1-O6 & O8) is the definitive 5-day qualification for groundworkers operating on public highways.
Delivered through intensive practical training and supporting classroom theory, candidates gain hands-on experience across every stage of street works operations. Delegates learn to trace underground utilities using CAT and Genny equipment, set up compliant signing, lighting, and guarding, safely excavate trenches, and install trench support. The curriculum also covers backfilling, sub-base compaction, cold-lay and hot-lay bituminous reinstatement, and modular surface repair.
By covering eight complete units, this course ensures operatives work safely, prevent utility strikes, and meet strict highway authority standards. Successful candidates earn full SWQR operative registration.
Prerequisites:
Candidates must be at least 16 years old, physically capable of manual site work, and possess a good understanding of English. Full PPE (boots, hard hat, high-vis clothing, ear defenders, safety glasses, and gloves) is required for practical yard exercises.
